Landscape
The site occupies a transitional position on the western edge of Melbourne, forming a natural continuation of the existing built-up area. Established residential neighbourhoods lie to the west, while agricultural land extends to the east. Existing mature boundary vegetation in addition to Derby Road and Main Street provides a strong sense of enclosure and plays an important role in defining defensible boundaries.
New pedestrian and cycle connections are proposed to link directly with the existing highway network, improving accessibility and encouraging walking and other sustainable modes of travel. The proposed footpaths will be enhanced by new planting, open spaces, and landscaped edges that help to preserve a sense of openness and reinforce the rural character of the site.
A detailed landscape strategy will be implemented to minimise visual impacts and ensure the development sits comfortably within its surroundings. This will include the retention and enhancement of existing boundary vegetation, alongside substantial new native tree and hedgerow planting to strengthen the site’s green framework. These measures will create a soft and gradual transition between the proposed homes and the open countryside beyond.
Overall, the proposals seek to protect important views, maintain visual connections to the wider landscape, and deliver a well-integrated and sensitively designed extension to the settlement that maintains a clear urban to rural transition.
